In 1981, Drs Jean-Pierre Pelletier and Johanne Martel-Pelletier co-founded the University of Montreal’s Osteoarthritis Research Unit at the Notre-Dame Hospital (now the University of Montreal Hospital Research Centre [CRCHUM]) thanks to generous donations from the private sector and foundations. The Unit has since been recognized worldwide for its original research and numerous discoveries in the field of osteoarthritis. In 2000, in order to consolidate and ensure the continuity of research activities in osteoarthritis, Drs Pelletier and Martel-Pelletier established the Chair in Osteoarthritis at the University of Montreal.
